He has engaged in an active trial practice for 17 years before federal and state courts in Virginia. Jim began his career with the firm of Rust & Rust in Fairfax, Virginia, ultimately serving as a partner in the firm’s Litigation and Estate Planning Section. He later joined the firm of Chaplin, Papa & Gonet in Richmond, Virginia, where he served as President and as a Director of its Litigation and Bankruptcy Sections. As a commercial litigator, Jim has tried numerous cases to verdict as well as taken clients through successful arbitration and mediation proceedings. He has substantial expertise and experience in commercial lending and leasing cases. Jim also has extensive experience in complex estate planning and administration. With particular emphasis on tax-motivated estate planning for high net worth individuals, Jim focuses on estate tax shelters, including credit shelter trusts, family limited partnerships, and family limited liability companies.
