JAMES E. KANE
Jim is a partner and one of the leaders of Gregory Kaplan, PLCs Litigation Team with extensive experience in a diverse array of legal matters. Since 1989 he has been engaged in an active trial practice before federal and state courts in Virginia. He counsels and represents clients in all areas of commercial law and litigation. He works with clients of all sizes, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Jim is admitted to practice before all Virginia state courts as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Fourth Circuit, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.
As a commercial litigator, Jim has successfully tried numerous bench and jury trials to verdict, as well as taken clients through successful arbitration and mediation proceedings. He has substantial expertise and experience in commercial lending and leasing cases.
Jim is also a member of the firms Bankruptcy and Creditors Rights Practice Team focusing on business reorganization and restructuring, creditors rights and related litigation. Jim has successfully reorganized a wide array of businesses through chapter 11 and out-of-court restructurings and routinely represents lenders, landlords, secured creditors and other entities in Chapter 11 and other bankruptcy proceedings. Jim also has extensive experience representing individuals in workouts and in complex bankruptcies under chapters 7, 11 and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code.
Jim also has extensive experience in complex estate planning and administration. With particular emphasis on tax-motivated estate planning or high net worth individuals, Jim focuses on estate tax shelters, including credit shelter trusts, family limited partnerships and family limited liability companies.
Additional Information
Jim began his career with the firm of Rust & Rust in Fairfax, Virginia, ultimately serving as a partner in the firms Litigation and Estate Planning sections. He later joined the firm of Chaplin, Papa & Gonet in Richmond, Virginia, where he served as President and Director in charge of its Litigation and Bankruptcy Sections. After 10 years he left Chaplin, Papa & Gonet to help co-found Gregory Kaplan.
Jim is an avid runner, cyclist, skier, soccer, softball and racquetball player.
